Collection of Original Handwritten and Drawn Geometry Problemsby William D. Slaymaker (of Lancaster County, Pa) in 1811 Interesting, because William was born in 1797 and one of the pages is dated 1811 which would mean that young William would have been only fourteen years old when he wrote this … pretty heavy stuff for a fourteen year old. Maybe kids were smarter and better educated 200 years ago. William is the son of Amos Slaymaker, also a talented mathematician (perhaps he schooled his son) who we happen to have a similar handwritten booklet by, being offered here in a separate sale. Much the same content but larger (28 pages) and infinitely superior draftsmanship. The Slaymaker family (originally Schleiermacher) came to America from Strasburg in Germany in 1708. First settling in a Huguenot colony in Esopus, New York State, about 100 miles north of New York City and finally to Pennsylvania, naming their new home Strasburg Township. The Slaymakers settled into an area primarily occupied by Indians and despite obvious hardships, thrived and began a large family. By the time we get to the early nineteenth century, the Slaymaker family tree is huge. There is a fantastic website on the Slaymakers with some interesting facts surrounding their exploits in the Revolutionary War. Of course, while the site gives births, marriages and deaths to hundreds of Slaymakers, it doesn’t get into individuals lives or which certain individuals might have been mathematicians or surveyors, so we’ll perhaps never know how these booklets of geometry problems came about. (If you read what I uncovered about Amos, William’s father, you’ll see what I mean). This collection of pages is in relatively good condition but William’s handwriting leaves a little to be desired. The front and back pages have become detached from the rest but are intact. I’ve taken random scans of a few pages but they’re too long for my scanner so the bottom couple of inches won’t show. The overall size is: 13″ x 8″ – 12 pages. 213 years old. Free insured USPS shipping. Inv. No. 1431 NOTE: I have another ‘booklet’ also by William Daniel Slaymaker similar to this one, but larger ( 28 pages). It’s undated, as far as I can see, but judging by the numbered problems, it’s actually a continuation of this one. A little more advanced, perhaps. Excellent condition. To see similar items and a large selection of interesting prints, documents and original art,Please visit our eBay Store Browse our Store
