Buncombe County, NC sustained considerable losses of records between the years 1830-1865 due to the Courthouse burning on three separate occasions. Very few marriage bonds pre-1868 survived. The index also has a substantial number of marriages and deaths occurring between 1840-1870 from southwestern Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, Georgia, and the Gulf States.
