A short introductory chapter builds a basic model of morality as the emotional extension of kin selection and a history of increasing interdependence. The evolution of cooperation and its tension with competition in social animals is discussed, using simple model organisms such as bees to illustrate basic concepts but quickly moving up to draw from research on humans’ closest ape relatives, chimpanzees and bonobos.
