Through nine case studies of productions ranging from Shakespeare’s history plays to musical farce, this illustrated volume explores three themes: the ways in which Britons re-created their own history in theatrical genres; how history on stage was used to develop political and national identities, particularly in America; and the fascination with the exotic and authenticity in theatrical events such as The Grand Pantomime Ballet of the Death of Captain Cook (1789).
